UNITY IN DIVERSITY

The Syndicate Bank Officer's Quarters (Dhanashreya) shortly called DOWA at Sector 17 Vashi is a classic example of unity in diversity. There is no segregation on the basis of caste or creed among the over 100 plus officers staying in the quarters. The Ganpathi Festival was the time to rejoice and get the blessings of Lord Ganesh. Aarti will be performed on all 7 days both in the mornings and evenings. Women used to take very active part.
Incidentally, there is a women's wing of Dhanashreya, which is working for the general welfare of the residents. The evening aarti would be followed by cultural activities arranged by the resident officers in a very planned and systematic way. Chief Guest is called to distribute prizes for the Best Performers. Both Young and old participate in these activities. Once I had the opportunity to perform on the stage with a nursery rhyme starting with " Johnny Johnny Yes Pappa " to keep the young children amazed. When I attracted their attention, I simply played " Jack and Jill Went up the hill to fetch a pale of water " in carnatic tune, followed by Punjabi, Hindustani and western music. I won the applause and accolades which I never forget during every Ganesh Festival. Some of the prizes are sponsored by individuals to keep the children encouraged all the time.
Community lunch is also arranged on Sunday after the culmination of Vishnu Sahasranamam by men, Lalitha Sahasranamam by ladies followed by Satyanarayana Puja. Officers arranged to prepare lunch and served them to all residents along with prasadams in a very well planned way. It is indeed a grand show of strength at DHANASHREYA. The neighbouring buildings admired the co-operation and togetherness all these years.

HOARDINGS A HURDLE
Illegal and increasing menace of banners has created a havoc in Mumbai. Metro city did suffer because of too much of illegal banners. It is a right step in the right direction that Municipal Chief takes up the issue personally and took upon himself the task of removing illegal hoardings. By putting banners and hoardings at every nook and corner the city is getting spoiled with shabby look and despite stern warnings the political parties are not heeding to the request of BMC and the trend continues.
It is high time we take note of the vital factors and do repairs on war footing or else the buildings and the city will lose its clean image. The hoardings are the cause for obstructing the beauty of the heritage buildings. Significantly, the Padmanabhan Committee appointed by the High court pointed out and recommended hoarding free areas in Chennai. Such remedial measures should follow in Mumbai as well. The hoardings not only attract road users while driving but also spoils the look as well. The High Level Group constituted by Planning Commission on Services Sector to examine and suggest means for development and maintenance of monuments and archaeological sites has made several recommendations. Once such recommendation is that ' the powers should pay heed to the following facts:-
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has the responsibility for maintenance and upkeep of all monuments and archaeological sites notified by the Government of India as a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological sites and Remains Act 1958. Some of the states have also enacted similar legislation and notified monuments and archaeological sites under the Acts. It is imperative to protect and redeem the lesser known monuments, many of which are lying in derelict state at present all over the country. All this would be fine if each state puts in place a Heritage Act and lists in it all heritage sites that need to be protected. After all, we don't have Heritage Act for any of the states. Maharashtra State should take the lead in this direction. Hoardings should be totally removed from all corners of the city and the people defying laws should be severely punished. Despite all the restrictions on hoardings used as the publicity tool of politicians keep on multiplying and there is no stopping. We will see an end to banner war sooner or later. Let us hope better sense will prevail in Mumbai in the days to come.

WOMEN S WOES
While travelling by Mumbai roads women feel insecure as in the streets chain snatching, molestation, eve-teasing and even throwing acid on the face, drowsing women in front of lookers, beating the women in public view all happen without much support from the public. In the end women are the losers and they will have to face music all alone. A new study has found that nine in 10 women have suffered some form of sexual discrimination at the workplaces, which is alarming and India is not an exception to this. The researchers at the Michigan University found that 10% of the women surveyed had experience the most severe form of harassment, in which they were promised promotion or better treatment. If they were co-operative in all aspects of life. The position of women is going from bad to worse in the male-dominated environments. It found that although few were subjected to actual advances, such as being groped, 90% had been subjected to gender harassment. This included offensive remarks about being female, their appearance, body language and the way of dressing etc etc. Cruel jokes are passed on to women and the Short Mailing System (SOS) is misused for the specific purpose. It is indeed a shameful act.
India still has a high number of female foeticide, in some places it gets worse—a new born baby girl’s neck is snapped so that the ‘burden’ in the family is destroyed forever. Her ordeal doesn’t end there, often one hears of marriages stalled or turning sour owing to dowry or due to the lack of it. Domestic violence, verbal abuse, cruelty are all sometimes just a part of lives of so many women in our country.
It is time to give respect and take respect from the better half rather than fighting for trivial matters. Money plays villain. But women work as the watchdogs, take prudent decisions by saving for the rainy days and keep a cool composure during rain and shine. Women transact online to invest in shares and help the family during financial difficulties. Even without sound educational background they manage money matters better than men.
The purpose of this article is not to dampen your spirit. I am not saying that you stop celebrating this special day. All I’m saying is that this Women’s Day, look around you. Do you see or know someone who needs help? A woman who is probably not as lucky as you? Lend her a hand, help her out. If that’s not feasible, because I know a lot of such women are just not ready to come out of the situation, then lend them a shoulder or an ear. And when they’re ready, they’ll let you know. It will prove far more satisfying than getting that designer handbag at dirt cheap price. Women at workplace should be respected all the time and need not be given testing times for getting their favour. It is time to recognize other sports personalities and give them also at part treatment like our cricketers. Women police force really suffers because they are the weaker sex in the department.
Women woes
The number of crimes committed on the womenfolk goes out of hand. We generally make unnecessary comments about the character of the womenfolk, their dress sense and other activities. But women shoulder all the major responsibilities in the household and still attend office work also most efficiently to lead a decent living. We in India respect the ladies and treat them at par with men. This is a right step in the right direction. Women have contributed great things to the society in general and to their families in particular. They take care of the children from the womb till the time the children are mature enough. In some cases women back them even after marriage and take care of the grand children as well. They fight every inch to keep the family flag flying high. Men did make mistakes in understanding the women all the time. Mostly the relationship is just from one side. Men fail to understand the feeling of the weaker sex and that is the root cause for all the problems. Men make hey when the sun shines and never admit their mistakes. At the same time women forgive and forget the follies of the men.Women will have to deal with at least 3 types of men in their life. Some of the husbands are spendthrifts, some of them are drunkards and some them are womanisers. To come out of such a sensuous relationship is not an easy thing and still come out successful in life. It is a matter of adjustment in life and the will to lead a normal life despite all the odds needs a lots of grit and determination. Striking a balance in life and work for the welfare of the family is not a joke. Housewives are the masters in looking after old parents/in laws. Taking care of the elderly people is a herculean task and keep them happy will be women's dream job. The motherhood is a treasure to preserve. Let us not trouble the expected mothers and provide them nutritious food. In trains, the co-passengers should offer seat to the expected mothers and help them out in case of need. On the part of ladies they must take proper precautions. Instead of displaying their wealth by wearing jewels and show-off as in fashion parade they should maintain decorum and that will not give scope for problems in public life. If there is will there is a way also. Women have the will to keep the family flag flying all the time. It's mothers all the way.
Mumbai or Delhi incidents of mass raping opened up the Pandora's Box. Women are always considered sex symbol. They deserve better place in the society. These culprits deserve corporal punishments. I am apprehensive of the involvement of the sons/kins of the elite class and hence the inaction on the part of the police. Stern action should be initiated against all these good for nothing teenagers. Let this be recorded in the college records of the individuals involved so that their future be sealed all together.
1. Girls must learn Unarmed Combat and keep pepper spray.
2. Whenever Such Incidents Happen Do Intervene.
3. Any such Incident Must be surely not go unreported.
4. Visuals or Videos have been very Important in the Mumbai and Delhi Cases of rape. But just to bring the matter to light, they should not be shown on and on to survive like this and do more harm.
5. One should be sensitive while passing statements against women.
6. Physical abuse against a Man , Woman, Transgender, Child or Gay person, if seen by a witness, must be non-bailable offence.
7. Severe and punitive punishment for rape and eve teasing deserves life imprisonment.
It is time to give women their due in the society.

IBL cannot come near IPL
With so much hype, hoopla and hysteria about IPL, no one can match the extravaganza. Saina Nehwal can boast upon IPL as an equal to IPL but in reality it is of no match the big bash. IPL matches are well organised and each of the match results were forgone one as the players were just paid the participation fees to fix matches in a team game like cricket. This they did for 6 seasons in succession and never caught in the process till the last IPL. IBL in the first two matches itself the stadiums were empty and the there was not much of crowd in smaller stadiums and there was no fanfare with big names in the game. Whereas in Cricket there were big shots in all the teams and the matches went day and night. Even after the matches night parties assumed greater importance than the matches. Comparing all this IBL was a poor cousin for the gret game of Indian Premiere League. Saina Nehawal can be elated after an unbeaten run that helped Hyderabad Hotshots lift the inaugural Indian Badminton League trophy. She can just expect that the USD one million event to become as big as cricket's IPL in the coming years. The popularity will come down still down in the coming years and it may be even difficult to run the show in the ensuing years. There are no big sponsors like the one in cricket, who were ready to throw crores of rupees and make Million dollars in the bargain in IPL. Despite IPL getting a bad name in the sporting circle people still compare everything to IPL cricket shows how the game is promoted blindly in India. It is indeed shame to compare With cheer girls and strategic time out and color attire all brought name and fame to the game. But the Standard of the game went down very badly as the Indian batsmen were getting out easily on overseas tour very easily and Team India was losing five day games with four days. Indian Badminton should not suffer the same fate like cricket.
Subbarao smiles
Union Government and the Finance Minister may fail and just put the blame of RBI Governor to save their faces, but in reality Subbaro played a stellar role in trying times and that amply appreciated chief of fellow bankers in India and abroad. The outgoing RBI Governor received all praise for his actions and deft handling of the ticklish issues relating to policy matters. Rao came, saw and conquered the dwindling economy and the free fall of Indian Rupee from going pathetically with swift moves. He managed things very well and adjusted to the maximum to the Finance Ministry but still P. Chidambaram was trying to spoil his retirement party from his loose talk. Top bankers have hailed the contributions of the outgoing Reserve Bank Governor Duvuuri Subbarao saying he did his best during a tenure that was marked by difficult times for the economy. Subbarao demits office with a smile and after being at the helm for five years that saw the beginning of the global recession from which it is yet to recover. Within a fortnight of him assuming office, global investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy and the hit pulled the global banking system down to an unprecedented credit crisis which eventually led to the worst recession since the Great Depression. This was followed by a difficult period which saw RBI working in close coordination with the government and other financial sector regulators, as also other central banks, to ring-fence the economy. While the fiscal and monetary stimuli ensured that the economy did not fall off cliff, this soon gave way to a spike in inflation. This saw rise in policy rates from October 2010 for a year or so even as growth started coming down. As Subbarao’s term moved close to ending, worries over slowing growth and stubborn inflation complicated the matter for the central bank. His problems got compounded with the fall of the rupee beginning May-end. It declined to a low of 68.85 intra-days to the dollar early last week, but with some wise thinking and intervention by RBI has recovered marginally. As he is not in favour of the Government he may not get Governor's post for some state and may be isolated here afterwards. Still, Subbarao smiled on his retirement.

Mumbai Police Deserves all praise
Mumbai not lagging behind in rape cases
In olden days, our democracy propogates by the people, of the people
and for the people. Of late we just see the failure of the Government,
failure of law and order and failure of the police all see young and old
failure of law and order and failure of the police all see young and old
women getting raped in the Metro of Mumbai. A Five year old and a 50
year old all raped in a day shows how we treat women as a sex toy.
This is the major cause for too many rapes in Mumbai.
Repeated cases of rapies takes place in Mumbai and suburbs and we
have no solution. Just like Terrorists enter from all corners of the country
to India, we find rapists every where in the commercial capital. When

GAME SET MATCH AND CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SERENA WILLIAMS
No woman has ruled Tennis World longer than Serena Williams, who, 14 years after she won her first slam title in New York as an ebullient teenager, took delivery of her fifth US Open championship as a seasoned champion by beating the breeze, her nerves and a final win over Victoria Azarenka in three sets. Williams served for the match twice in the second set and once in the third, and gave the loser proper credit for making it a gripping, wind-racked, error-strewn final. From a set and 1-4 down in wind that would have knocked Nelson off his poop deck, Azarenka forced a tie-break then a third session. After two hours and 45 minutes, Williams was as relieved as she was elated in celebrating a 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 victory. The Wind would have been a suitable changeover soundtrack. Williams, with the shorter swing, initially appeared equipped to handle the gusts more easily than Azarenka, who put a forehand long to give the American three break points at the start of the match; the winner Williams put past her opponent to break was fully loaded, giving the breeze no say. However, with the wind at her back after the changeover, she suffered the same difficulties as Azarenka and also hit long to drop serve. Between them this year they have won 11 titles and nearly $11million (£8.35m). Williams's haul has been impressive, a combined winner's cheque of $3.6m (after winning the US bonus challenge) taking her season's prize money past $9m, and her career swag past $50m. Only Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have earned more prize money in a single season. There can be no doubt Williams and Azarenka are the best two players in the world — and good friends. Their rivalry is a healthy one, and growing, but there were no concessions on final day, because both have much to prove at polar ends of their careers.

PAES WAVES MAGIC WAND
Leander Paes has eased past the milestone of his 40th birthday, made a car wreck of a Bollywood movie and overcome brain surgery, but nothing beats his 20-year love affair with New York. This is Paes' 20th year as a professional at the US Open, a tournament where he had already been a junior champion in 1990 and where he learned to grow up faster than other boys his age. It was a process encouraged by his father Vece, a 1972 Olympic Games bronze medalist with the Indian hockey team. The fourth seeded Indo-Czech pair demolished the second seeded Austria-Brazilian pair 6-1 in 6-3 in one hour and 12 minutes at Arthur Ashe stadium. It was a perfect climax for Paes and Stepanek, who came into the US Open with title in Winston Salem Open, as they won their second major title together, having won Australian Open last year. It was third US Open title for 40-year-old Paes and the previous two had also come with Czech partners. In 2006, the Indian won with Martin Damm and in 2009 with Lukas Dlouhy. Last year at the US Open, Paes had ended runner-up with Stepanek, losing to Bryan brothers. Now Paes has 14 major titles in his cupboard, including six mixed doubles trophies. Stepanek has two Grand Slam titles, both with Paes. It was one of the most lopsided title matches as Peya and Soares failed to put up a fight. They had no clue whatsoever on how to counter the rampaging Indo-Czech combine. Kudos to Paes and his partner for the stupendous win.
CASTRATION CORRECT VERDICT FOR RAPISTS
The Justice J'S Verma committee on sexual offences against women rejected the suggestion of chemical castration of rapists, as it considered handing down such a punishment would violate human rights and that mutilation of the body is not permitted under the Constitution. "We note that it would be unconstitutional and inconsistent with basic human rights treaties for the state to expose any citizen without their consent to potentially dangerous medical side effects. However, it is time to punish rapists most severely so that such mistake will not recur. The nation, which had almost got immune to rapes, with one rape taking place in the country every 22 minutes, has suddenly woken up from the deep slumber after the gory Delhi rape case. And now, India is giving unanimous call to the government to dole out severe punishment to the rapists and to plug the lacunae in the anti-rape laws. Amidst all this, a strong voice has also been raised to introduce chemical castration as a punishment for the rapists, which has already been accepted in various US states and many countries in Europe. Is it time to give this severe punishment?

CRICKET LOVELY CRICKET

MAINTAIN SPIRIT BEHIND JUBILEE TEST IN THE CENTENARY TEST ALSO
1980 Jubilee Test proved to be an eye-opener with then skipper Gundappa Vishwanath setting high standards in sportsman spirit. Even though we lost the test match, we were able to maintain the decorum of Gentleman's game. Fourtunately for India, Vishy was asked to lead Team India in the one off test match. Had it been Sunil Gavaskar he would not have recalled Bob Taylor back to the crease. The present day cricketers and captains play spoilsport. Despite a win over West Indies, Dhoni did not maintain the spirit behind the victory by finding fault with the umpiring of Harper and that has created a big stir with allegations and counter allegations even after a fortnight. But on the other hand Jubilee Test is talked about even after 31 years simply because of the history being created on the cricketing field by a fine gesture. This reminds me of the West Indies captain of 1960s Frank Worrell. Despite the loss in the most controversial 1960-61 Tie test series against Australia, the Adelaide test saw most important decision going against the Caribbeans and that was the root cause of them to lose the test series by a narrow margin of 1-2 with the first test at Brisbane ending in a tie and Adelaide test ending in a draw with Ken McKay and Leslie Kline holding the fort for Kangaroos. In the prize giving function, Worrell was gracious to shine the cup with coat sleeves before handing over to the Australian skipper Richie Benuad. We miss such scenes in contemporary cricket. We hope that in the Centenary Test between India and England the likes of Dhoni, Harbhajan, Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth behave decently in front of the paid spectators at the Mecca of cricket. It is time to behave in an exemplary way in a gentleman's game instead of just showing off with GALLIS and SLEDGING. Team India should behave sportingly if they are the real number one test side.

PLAY FOR A WIN
The major reason for the twin defeats is ineffective bowling changes by the captain, innocuous pace our medium-pacers and the inefficient bowling of our so called sole spinner in the side Harbhajan Singh. To add salt to the wound ordinary fielding made us to pay heavily when we chase a big total. Fitness level of key players is a cause of worry for some time but we play with them all the time thinking that they are indispensable in the side. The batting looked brittle and we always satisfy ourselves saying that the Batsmen select themselves in the side as though the upcoming players knocking the doors are good for nothing. When players with 17000 runs and 14000 runs fail miserably, how can we blame the new comers. A bowler with 400 wickets to his kitty is bowling pathetically and still finds his place in the side all the time and in all forms of the game shows our short sightedness. The second new ball was the turning point of the second test and Stuart Broad's hat-trick changed the fortunes of the English side. When we talk high about Rahul Dravid's innings, Bell powered his way to an English win. His run out dismissal was not in good taste at the first instance and Dhoni tried to make amends for his team's action. The hot spot failed to detect Laxman's snick and that helped India to achieve 67 runs first innings lead. Thereafter, England never looked back and it was an one sided game after Sunday afternoon. The Indian bowling team never turn up to play domestic Ranji or Duleep Trophy matches and so short of stamina and hence not able to bowl long spell of sustained bowling, whereas English bowlers had the measure of Indian super star batsmen all the time. Team India could not touch 300 run mark in the four outings but allowed the opposition to score tons of runs after getting early breaks. Broad batted well in both the innings and bowled well throughout the series, deservingly won the Man of the Match award. Our players involved in one day wonders and IPL Tamasha failed to live up to their home image and lost the test matches heavily and the threat of losing the number one Test spot looming large on Team India. It is indeed testing time for Team India.
