ACID TEST AWAITS TEAM INDIA

An acid test awaits Team India ahead of the tour of South Africa.  No
2 rating of Team India in Test match cricket is not going to matter to
the South African side as they are geared up to provide shorter stuff
to torment Indian batsmen.  With the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, who
recently retired or a sound opening bat to back up the middle order
batting, the tail is totally exposed before a ball being bowled in the
series. Sheer pace, bouncy pitches and lethal bowling attack all will
pose a problem or two for the so called super stars of Indian Cricket.
On the eve of the tour, Dhoni can just brush aside the talent of South
African side and divert the attention by saying that his team is high
on confidence.  Playing in our backyard and accumulating runs in
plenty is not going to be the case and one has to work each run and
each run conceded will be prove costly in the final result of the two
match series. By taking into account Sachin Tendulkar's impending
retirement we avoided making a full tour of South Africa and instead
played against a weak West Indies side to make our home dreams come
true. This is not case in an overseas tour as we face genuine fast
bowling on fast wickets. Before disembarking a tour to other countries
we play with wet tennis balls to prune up our batting skills against
pace bowling and at the most play on a concrete wicket to adjust to
the seaming conditions.  But that is not enough as the balls are
generally pitched short for lateral movement and steep bounce.  As
Indian batsmen likes to bat square of the wicket we can see number of
batsmen getting caught in the slips or caught by wicket-keeper.  Sammy
caught five Indian batsmen in the last test of Sachin and those five
catches include Sachin Tendulkar getting out for 74. Such silly slicy
shots played towards slips will cause innumerable problems to the top
order batting line up and provide good fielding practice for the South
African side.  One should learn to play more in front of the wicket
for staying longer at the wicket in Proteas land. It will be a tough
challenge for an over rated side like Team India.

Dhoni proved as a lucky captain and just depending on toss, pitch and
the crowd support to win home matches may not look good for a team
aspiring to become number one side in test cricket.  Overseas tours
are tough as you are away from home conditions and the pitches are not
slow as we play with team in India. In the last 8 overseas matches in
England and Australia we lost all the 8 matches and without much
fight.  Most of the matches ended in four days resulting in innings
defeat for the Dhoni's team.  We have not done our home work properly
and just pack our bag for a strenuous tour expecting miracles to
happen.  Dhoni can look for excuses as he mentioned about the need of
Gautam Gambhir in the side.  However, Gambhir is really a liability as
he could not cope up with genuine pace bowlers and his sliced cut will
land in the hands of slip cordon most of the time. Dhoni is just
looking for excuses before the start of the tour.  Whether it is one
day or test cricket, it is indeed an acid test for Indian Team when we
play away from home. There is no need of going through the ratings but
the end result will only prove, who is the better side.  Good luck for
Team India.

Don't blame on umpires

India’s stone-age attitude to technology may have cost Sachin Tendulkar's wicket at the Eden Gardens Kolkota.  Indian press went Ga Ga about the LBW decision given to Sachin.  India's "stubborn rejection" of state-of-the-art decision review technology cost a wicket. The same thing holds good when Shillingord was declared LBW to Sachin Tendulkar.  We did not contest as the same was taken by the man with Golden Arm and there is no doubt.  India once again refused a decision review system (DRS) despite the pleas of ICC as we use money power to nullify all effects and win easily at home all the time. Even Powell and Samuels were dismissed by dubious decisions in the second innings.  Indian team is trying to evade state of art technology by giving lame excuses and once when it pinches them all through a test match and lose by a close margin then only BCCI will realize its folly and embrace technology with both the hands.  Instead of just seeing just the weakness of opposition we blame umpiring while winning matches at home all the time. It is indeed a shame for Indian to blame the umpires when Sachin is given out.  Be a sport always.

selectors axed trio

Game of cricket is changing into a transition period in India.  We have seen drastic changes in the Indian side and the seniors are being chucked out one by one.  In a recent mover, the selectors have taken a bold decision to drop out three musketeers of Indian Cricket Virendra Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan from the central contract of the BCCI as they were not required as of now as there replacements are doing fine.  Murali Vijay fill the gap as opener in place of Sehwag and Ashwin got his appointed place in the role of an off-spinner and hence Harbhajan Singh is ousted.  Zaheer Khan has been in injured list for an unduly long time and we fit players in the side before the World cup 2015 and not passengers in the side.  Over and above, now Ganguly, Laxman, Dravid and Sachin have been asked to go and the youngsters are stepping in their shoes.  Thus the selectors played with a straight bat and it is a right step in the right direction.  Sehwag could not control emotions and was raising voice against captain Dhoni, Harbhajan was simply issuing statements as he is still a force to reckon with in the Indian side and Zaheer was simply going through motions all the while and there is no active participation in the Indian Team. Dhoni has realised his dream of packing seniors and now he has eliminated almost all seniors in a master move and the selectors helped him to do the rest.

ATM ATTACK
The law and order situation is going from bad to worse.  ATM attack is really a gruesome case to be taken on priority basis. The security lapse is clearly evident and alarming as well. If urban Indians suffer like this what will be the fate of people in rural India. Banks going on opening ATM centres and RBI allot Licence to Bank Branches in rural centres without proper security. There is no security to guard ATM machines and the risk involved is on higher side now a days. One good thing happened in the Bangalore ATM attack is the proper functioning CC TV camera. Now it is up to the Bank Management to provide much needed viewing by the Bank Managers for on site ATMS and off-site ATMs should be connected to Bank.s link for regular follow-up. Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is the centre from which number of frauds are generated showed where the weakness lies.  Banks instead of providing security to its employees, they make them suffer for small mistakes and accountability is fixed without any proven facts.  FIR needed shall have to be lodged without wasting much of the time and that will lead to the arrest of the concerned persons as early possible before they run out of the country. Congress ruled states suffer law and order problems and instead setting their own house in order, UPA Government at the Centre is trying to pass on the buck and deviate attention with trivial matter. The failure of the Government is loud and clear and people are not able to get proper security and suffer for ever.

SWAN SONG FOR SACHIN TENDULKAR

There is one player on the Indian team,
Who is undoubtedly its cream,
He has a world renowned name,
Which is reflected in his name,
He might look short and small,
But his batting makes him look ten feet tall.
When he is at the crease you forget the rest,
And you know he is undoubtedly the world's best.
With all the runs that he can hatch,
He can change the complete face of the match,
This man is the World's Eighth Wonder
And the the stadiums he brings thunder.
As he leads his team to victory after victory,
He will be remembered forever in history.
The man leaves no doubt in my mind.
He is absolutely one of a kind,
He can make the ball on the field blur,
And his name I know, you know is
SACHIN RAMESH TENDULKAR
Super Star Sachin

WHETHER SACHIN TENDULKAR QUITTING TEST CRICKET BECAUSE OF COMPULSION?

Sachin come down the pitch many a time but this time round it is an ultimatum from the selectors to quit after the 200th test of his in India.  BCCI tried all the tricks up the sleeves to have the climax match in India so that Sachin can retire peacefully and that too in front of his home fans.  Having played for records and created many records, Sachi is now set for another record of sort by playing his 200th Test Match in a career spanning from 1989 Karachi Test against Pakistan under Krishnamachari Srikkanth's captaincy.  He has come around a big circle with ups and downs and it is time to hand his boot.  BCCI's plan to ask Sachin Tendulkar to retire after the 200th test in November this year is a right step in the right direction. Ironically, Tendulkar did not play T-20 International and he was asked to quit one day cricket to pave way for young legs to take his place.  Now, the turn is coming for the Test Match cricket.  Board played all the Board Game to almost cancel South African tour and made elaborate arrangements to have the final fixture in India, so that the franchise can reap a rich harvest of money and the same does not go to South African Board.  Had he played the last innings against South Africa against the likes of Steyn and scored a half century or even less in a winning cause would have mattered much rather than making a century against weak West Indies and bid farewell.  Already we are not playing much of the conventional game against Zimbabwe, Pakistan, New Zeland for a long time in their land and now add to that South Africa is also included. Despite all the news going round the media, Sachin is sitting pretty and ready for the record.  He is a living legend and should quit in style rather than going overboard before doing so on compulsion.

In spite of the critics considering Sachin Tendulkar a flop he came out with sweet little innings to boost team total and added valuable runs in the last couple of years for Team India.  Players like Lara failed miserably during their bad phase and never recovered and then announced his retirement.  Sachin was in the limelight throughout and even at the time of retirement also he is a star performer.  Why not we call him " TON" dulkar. Sachin was the first person to get run out when the dismissal was referred to the third umpire in the India - South Africa match.
CRICKETING CONTROVERSIES

First Test between India and West Indies at Kolkota did not evince much interest. There were empty seats at the Eden Garden stands.  And once Sachin Tendulkar was declared out for 10 (That is why he is called Tendulkar) spectators started to get up from their seats and that shows our crowd did not want to see weak West Indies playing however, they were eager to see Little Master hitting runs against minnows. When he was declared out LBW to Shillingford the cricketing controversies erupted as in the past.  In the late 1990s when Sachin Tendulkar was leading the Indian side and when he was declared out LBW for a ball that struck him on the helmet, we went on crying that there was no chance of the ball hitting.  But a knowledgeable cricket enthusiast will agree that when left handed Milkha Singh went down to sweep on one knee and if the ball struck his turban then also he is out LBW in that sitting position.  Just like that Sachin was trapped in that position and we made it a big fuss for a fortnight.  Sachin is short enough and hence the LBW decision was upheld. Again, when Jonty Rhodes took a blinder in the backward point position diving  ( a trap laid for Tendulkar as he used to play uppish on the up) we contested that the catch was taken off the ground.  Again, now the LBW decision which raised eye brows as in the past. Why there is so much partiality when Sachin is foxed and caught on the wicket shuffling we try to give a new look to the laws of cricket. Somehow, we could not understand why his fans and the media behave indifferently time and again and crop up the issue. After all Umpire's decision is final and the players should walk instead of staying back. It is better to avoid cricketing controversies.

Performance wise both Tendulkar and Lara have achieved very many records in International cricket.  However, Sachin had an edge over the left-handed batsman as Sachin was able to score runs when he was going through a bad patch also whereas Lara used to fail miserably and that was the reason that he could not last longer in International cricket.  Even during the bad phase Sachin was having an average of 20 plus but other super stars of world cricket could not have the magic touch to perform during adversity and that was the reason Sachin lasted till the age of 40.  Sachin is subtle player of both pace and spin and his match saving innings made the opposition to work for special strategy to contain the master blaster.  Sachin was an enigma on the field and did help many youngsters to come up in life.  He must continue to so and help as a coach and bring laurels to the country in a different capacity as a brand ambassador. Sachin deserves Bharat Ratna and a sure shot to hit the top.

Sachin Tendulkar has achieved all the laurels in the cricketing field and there is nothing left in his long and illustrious career.  He hit a purple patch in his cricketing career of 24 years and never looked back after playing his first knock in the Karachi Test in 1989 against Pakistan.  He did a marvellous job in pulling out the team from disaster many a time and created many world records in the process as well.  International cricket taught him to be a gentleman and on the eve of his retirement he had made a request not to pamper with his mementos and gifts in his final outings at Mumbai.  Sachin has won all the trophies and so he wants an art as an farewell gift.  The only thing he missed in his bright career is a triple hundred in Test Cricket.  Unfortunately as the longest serving member of Indian team he could not experience a series win in Australia or in South Africa.  Now his colleagues in the Indian Team should strive hard to win a series in the above countries and make Sachin a happy man in his retired life.

There is one player on the Indian team,

There are number of claimants for hosting Sachin Tendulkar's 200th test match and for bidding goodbye to him.  MCA as the headquarters of Indian cricket and as Sachin Tendulkar hails from Mumbai his200th Test Match will be at Mumbai.   BCCI has temporarily cancelled South African Tour only to pave way for the highest Century maker to make most of the easy paced wicket at Wankhede and go with a happy memory.  West Indies team may not be a match for Team India in the two test series and we never expect miracles happen in the series

In the fashion world, Sari has assumed prominent place, with the womenfolk preferring the six yard wonder as the best dress for all the seasons. It is worth mentioning here that the women in Pakistan prefe saris even though ex-president Zia declared it un-Islamic. By draping the saree around your body with proper matching blouse, you get the feeling of security and the posh look.  The Kancheepuram Saree get the top spot but the shiffon and pure silk saris assumes greater look when you attend a function. The traditional dress saree is a household dress amongst Indian women living abroad also. The pallu and the pleets all give you a georgeous appearance. There is nothing like a sari to make you look most elegant all the times. There is no doubt about it.

INDIAN CRICKET TEAM'S SHORT SELECTION IS FARCE

Even before the seven match series started I gave a hint that both Suresh Raina and Yuveraj Singh are good for nothing as they are scared of short pitched deliveries and swishing outside the stump is their main weakness.  The maintained that and proved me right in the series.  I can select a better Indian side.  The side always play for do or die matches most of the time and that shows their inherent weakness.  Haad the pitches in India are pacy like the one Mohali we could have lost the series by now. In spite of India's defeat at Mohali, Ishant Sharma is retained in the side for the next four matches for Star sports cup matches. Such a poor display of bowling by Ishant Sharma could have cost his place in the side in other countries.  But selectors lack the much needed acumen to give a long rope to spent force like Ishant Sharma.  It is time to infuse young blood instead of trying a tested Ishant Sharma all the time.  We have talented tearaway fast bowlers from Delhi, Haryana, UP, Punjab and Kerala and trying a tired bowler is a futile attempt.  Even if the traumatised bowler from the Indian team take five or six wickets in the remaining games, he has caused the damage to Team India, which is irreparable and will be talked for years.  In the past we saw cricketers getting few chances and sent to domestic cricket but in the present team even passengers are getting repeated chances and still fail miserably.  Take the case of Subramaniam Badrinath.  He is the prolific run getter in the Indian domestic circuit and considered the right person to replace Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar with his perfect batting technique.  Having played the pace of Dayle Steyn and selected as a replacement of Tendulkar several time he is an automatic choice in the Indian side when Sachin is going to leave than number 4 spot.  Instead we try Tom, Dick and Harry for that position. If you give a player n number of chances, then he is likely to succeed once in a blue moon.  That is the case of many Indian Cricketers and they retain their places as captain's men for a quite a long time.  It is time to build a strong Indian side leaving alone partiality as the selection satire make us weary decades after decades and the end result is just a defeat on a tough overseas tour. Let us revamp our side now.

Subject: Play Safe and cautious Diwali

Deepavali or the Festival of lights is an important and popular
festival celebrated throughout the country in one form or the other
except in Kerala.  It falls on the last day of the dark half of
Kartika(October-November). Deepavali is associated with several
legend.  One myth says that on this auspicious day Lakshmi, the
Goddess of wealth, roams about and visits the house of people. It also
commemorates the triumph of the good over the evil(or triumph of God
Rama over Ravana and Rama's return to Ayodhya.) It is also on this day
that Krishna killed the demon Nakasura.

A few days before the festival, the houses are whitewashed and
completely cleaned. The courtyards,  the gates and the place of
worship are decorated with bandnavars, flowers, intricate colourss
paperwork and at night every nook and corner of the house etc. is
illuminated with earthen lamps, candles and fireworks are displayed.
Sivakasi crackers are the best business with logos of Lion, Kuyil are
available all over India. After the crackers were busted we can see
Tamil news dailies spread all over the streets in pieces and cleaning
becomes an ordeal thereafter. People get up early in the morning in
the south and have bath and move about freely in an atmosphere of
gaiety, mirth, rejoicing and festivity. Lots of sweets are prepared
and exchanged. At night Lakshmi along with Ganesh is worshipped, old
accounts are closed and new accounts are opened with fresh account
books. In Tamil Nadu and other places new Cinemas are released on that
day and the people loved to see the first show to complete Deepavali
festival.

Deepavali also marks the advent of new season and the sowing of new
crops.  Thus, this great festival of lights symbolises man's urge to
move towards light of truth from darkness of ignorance and
unhappiness. It is wise to play safe during Diwali to avoid major fire
accidents.  The pollution in the air is harmful to lungs and people
have wear mask or stay indoors during the peak time when crackers are
burnt to the maximum. It is wise to go to Kerala during Diwali to
avoid getting submerged in poisonous cracker smoke in Mumbai/Navi
Mumbai.
One should take following precautions while bursting crackers:-
1. Light aerial display fireworks like rockets only on open grounds.
2. Keep fire extinguishers or buckets of water ready to deal with any
accidental fire.
3.Make not of emergency numbers to call in case of an emergency.
4. Keep toddlers and pets like dogs inside house while bursting fire crackers.
5. Do not keep burning candles near your firework cracker bag/s.
6. Do not try your hand in firing more than one cracker at a time.
7. Do not direct rockets towards buildings or towards nearby hutment.
8. Do not fire crackers in the middle of the road when the traffic is on flow.
9. Do not carry crackers inside a car other vehicles or in a local train.
10. Do not try a hand on home made crackers or making use of the fired one.
11. Do not show your face while firing a cracker.
12. Always fire crackers outside your flat.
13. Clear the area of all flammable material before you start bursting crackers
      including cars and motor vehicles.
14. Keep tiny children away from fire crackers.
15. Ensure an adult supervision while firing crackers.
16. Use agarbattis instead of sparklers or a lighted matchstick or a
candle to light       fire crackers.
17.  Do not wear loose clothes while firing crackers.
18. Put all the burnt fire crackers inside a metal contained and dispose them.
19. Make sure if a fire cracker fail to take of or burst leave it
alone in one corner.
20. As the fire crackers suddenly burst do not pass it on but throw it
to remote             Corner to avoid fire accidents.
If ensure that all the care is taken with prudence then we celebrate
safe Diwali.

DIRTY TRICKS

Ball tampering issue came to prominence last week when Du Plessis the South African player was fined 50 per cent of his match fee after admitting tampering with the ball during the third day of the second test against Pakistan. Du Plessis used pocket zip to roughen the ball and the was caught in the camera and the umpires spotted the unfair method of rubbing the ball to the trousers.  Ball tampering is part parcel of world cricket and it is not a new one.  Pakistan after being bundled out for 99 in the first innings feel the pinch as they were facing defeat.

This is not the odd case on the cricketing field and it is the oldest profession to change the shape, remove the shine or to keep shine on one side, or to roughen the entire ball to get better grip for spinners or to get reverse swing for medium pacers.  Soda Water bottle cap spread in the boundary line helped our Ranji cricketers to roughen the ball when the ball is hit to the boundary.  As there were no camera for Ranji games, players deliberately waited in the boundary line and made sure that the ball is roughened up to the desired level before throwing the ball back to the bowler. Pakistan pacemen were the best in the business once upon a time but others learned the art by experience.  India's Manoj Prbhakar used to reverse swing the old ball to perfection and taught the act to Kapil Dev, the then captain of the side and highest wicket taker in test cricket at one point of time at 432 wickets, surpassing 431 wickets of Richard Hadlee of New Zealand.  In school and college level cricketers, players used to apply hair oil in their person to keep the shine on the ball going. Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (jr) rolled the new ball on the turf to remove the shine and for the early introduction of Bedi and Prasanna into the attack and the Indian Umpires those days were just sorry spectators as the Indian captain was doing the damage to the ball. Afridi went on to bite the ball in the field to make it rough and help Pakistan side to win at least one game.

Mike Atherton made it rather easy as he brought some dirt inside his pocket and on entering the ground and having got the ball in possession from the umpire after a break, he slowly applied dirt on the ball but was caught red handed in the process.  The worst of all the ball tampering was seen in India in the 1977-78 series against England. Tony Greig showered praise on our umpires on reaching India by saying that the Indian umpires are the best in the world.  And this send a wrong signal as our umpires failed to note Vaseline being applied by John Lever, the left-arm medium pace bowler playing test cricket for the first time finished as the best all rounder in his debut match as well the series.  He was keeping a capsule in his eye brow to prevent sweat entering but inside the capsule Vaseline was kept for easy application. Despite Indian Umpires officiating England were 3-0 up when in the next test Team India could win the Bangalore test with an under prepared wicket and most of the catches close in were taken of the pads and Indian umpires obliged and one Yujuvendra Singh created a new world record of 7 catches close to the wicket. Rahul Dravid was caught while applying lozenge to the ball but not penalised much. Sachin Tendulkar, the man in limelight picked the seam of the ball in South Africa (watch you tube-Sachin Picking the seam of the ball) and try to provide better grip to our spinners but left alone with least punishment.  It is all in the game and the Asian Countries Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka perfected the art to make best use in a cricketing field.  Now Du Plessis is punished for his offence and we have to wait and watch the next way of tampering in a cricketing field as the cameras are filming the dirty tricks and the umpires turn round and watch the bowler, when he goes to the top of the run before delivering the ball, such unfair methods should come down drastically in present day cricket.  Thus dirty tricks spoil the gentleman's game and most of senior cricketers did in different styles and used different methods to roughen the ball and give an extra edge to their bowlers. This is not the proper way playing cricket but they chose the option to meet success for their team by hook or crook. Dirty tricks continue to haunt International cricket.

Boria and BCCI Burst

When anything served in a very aristocratic way then that would end only in disaster. This we find Boria Majumdar, who used make use of all adjectives to praise Team India and slow down when the team lost it out disastrously.  This we have seen after the 2011 World cup and continued unabated until recently before Times giving pink slip to the agitated commentator.  Cricket is Gentleman's game and we need to a liberal outlook rather than just showering praise on your favourite side all the time.  Other countries are also performing well at the highest level and that too without fixing on home conditions and winning overseas series also. It is a matter of great concern that Boria made Board and the Indian players demi-God and now find a wrong foot and getting ousted. BCCI ended the career with a masterstroke on this occasion and we could not hear a heavy voice always at the pitch of the voice shouting for nothing. It is better to be a freelancer as I did for the last 42 years giving my bold and purposeful comments on the fall out of Indian cricket time and again.  Boria chose a wrong way and now paying heavy price for complacency.  That was how a historian did not find the name in the news channel and pushed out even without a Thank You.  It would indeed be in the interest of all parties involved and transparency in journalism if official communications would lay all speculation to rest.  Indian cricket is full of controversy as we saw even we saw South Africa's Logat was suspended then the likes of Boria Majumdar is nothing against the Board of Cricket Controversies in India.  Missing Boria Majumdar blurred my favourite news channel.  What a a pity for a historian?

BCCI on the dock
The seven match one day series between India and Australia reached an interesting stage as the Aussies have established lead from the start and play according to Indian conditions.  Perhaps, a few seasons of IPL cricket helped them a lot in adjusting to the climatic conditions and the low bounce in our pitches very well.  Both Ranchi and Cuttack matches were washed out resulting in Aussies lead the series.  Even Rain Gods seems to be against the Board for having made an attempt to keep things under control in the matter of pitch, its umpires and even the commentators.  Now everything have gone awry and not it is survival to save the series. We opened up controversy from the word go in appointing BCCI commentators.  After all the hype and the hush up, the series is interestingly poised and if Australia win one more match it is curtains for Team India in the remaining two matches.  Thus the bossing around by BCCI may not yield much fruit.

CRICKET LOVELY CRICKET
As a cricket fan and a statistician from Navi Mumbai I have compiled
match by match and innings by innings statistics of Sachin Tendulkar,
Sunil Gavaskar and the greatest of all, Sir Donald Bradman.
Incidentally the statistics on the last mentioned Australian star
compiled by me is kept in Brawl Museum in Adelaide.  Sunny Gavaskar
appreciated my efforts for taking so much pain and compiling it with
details of match aggregate, match average, overall runs till that
match. total average till that match, number of 100s/50s and whether
match was won or lost etc. apart from the age of the player during
every match and the venue as well with first and second innings scores
separately and the total of that match. I would like to part with the
statistics to your esteemed magazine if you permit me to send the same
through e mail.  As I am in the process of completing Sachin's
statistics till the 200th test at Mumbai, please provide me an
