MAHATMA GANDHIJI AS A CRICKETER
A CARTOON WITH MAHATMA GANDHI HAVING A BAT IN HAND-please open up attachment Whatever said and done by Gandhiji really helped India to attain Independence from the British rule finally. 1930 -The Dandi March to the 1942- Quit movement Gandhiji was all the way dictating terms to the English. However he was member of the MCC side touring India. Mahatma Gandhi, when requested for an autograph "played with a straight bat", quite forgetting that he was engaged in a mighty and bloodless revolution with the British-and thereby became a member of an official in England Team. How he was chosen could not probably have been explained even by the MCC selectors. Requested for his autograph Gandhiji turned over the pages and put his signature as the 17th player of the MCC team led by Douglas Jardine in 1933-34. The autograph book is one of the treasured possessions of the Marlybourne Cricket Club( MCC ) at Lord's. Not only Gandhiji signed autograph book but also played for the team comprising of Indians of British origin. Mahatma Gandhi played for a team of British origin against a team of Indian origin at London and scored 21 runs with 3 boundaries. He took one wicket also. He was wearing pant and shirt while playing. Gandhiji was not only a cricket enthusiast but he also wielded the willow. R.G. Mehta, a boyhood friend and schoolmate wrote" It is not commonly known that Gandhiji was a dashing cricketer and evinced keen interest in the game. Once we were watching a cricket match together. In those days there were ding-dong battles between Rajkot city vs Rajkot Sardar (camp area). At a crucial moment, as if by intuition, Gandhiji said that a particular player would be out and hey presto the batsman was really out. The freedom spirit of Gandhiji came from the cricketing field. |

MARRIAGES ARE MADE IN HEAVEN
It is universally told that Marriages are made in Heaven. The fact
remains in this universe even after centuries and the married couples
make up their mind to have marriage bliss to have a smooth sailing in
family life. Live and let others live policy come handy in marriage
life as well. Give and take way of running a family appears to be the
best option for Indian way of living. We did not expect much and the
results are forthcoming. Taking dowry and giving dowry should be
totally abolished in Indian marriages. The fruits of dealing of
problems one at time yield good results. Understanding each other in
familiar situation provide best atmosphere in daily routine and pay
handsomely for a peaceful living.
Marital bliss is finding perfect happiness in marriage. When a couple
experiences marital bliss, it does not mean that they do not have
problems; they simply know how to resolve them and get back to loving
each other. The University of Washington Psychology Professor John
Gottman states communication is essential to having marital bliss.
While studying 3,000 couples, he has noticed that happy couples use
“five times more positive behaviors than negative ones,” while unhappy
couples are quick to criticize each other. In theory, learning how to
talk to one's spouse helps one achieve marital bliss.
Winning does not matter when one is looking for marital bliss. In
fact, trying to compete to win arguments often makes the situation
worse. Society teaches both men and women to compete in order to
succeed, and it is easy to bring that mental state into the marriage.
Unfortunately, doing so puts love and respect in the background. In
order to achieve marital bliss, both people in the marriage must work
towards the same goal. Fighting and arguing destroy marriages. It is
essential that both parties use the love and respect they have for the
other to uplift and inspire them. Acting in love helps couples achieve
marital bliss. It is a matter of adjustment and paying attention to
your spouse gives you the joy of life time and ensure you to face
stiff challenges during trying times.
Children are there for our support and the grand children provide joy
and pleasures of living full size life. Enjoyment is part and parcel
of life and we make use of the time and money in the best way possible
to achieve maximum enjoyment. When children approach us for help then
we really realise our importance and the will to live longer to be
part of their life. During the "bad times," there is more arguing and
blaming, less sharing and touching, fewer moments of joy and
appreciation. But we weather the storms, and some 50 percent of us do
stay married. What most couples don't realize, say marriage experts,
is that there are things they can do to ensure better times than
worse, to make riding out the storms smoother and easier. An open mind
and an open heart serve as a mirror and enrich your loving life to
last longer. There lies the success of marriage bliss for senior couples.

PIVOTAL ROLE OF A POSTCARD
Some time ago the entire media sang the dirge of the telegram. As
this sentiment weighed heavily with me too. I made a final visit to
the Sanpada post office with a swift round of post offices in and
around Navi Mumbai wondering how long the hallowed institution of the
post office would be relevant in context of the recent technological
explosion in communication. That the post office plays an important
role in society cannot be questioned, however reluctant one may be to
sing its praises!. Not for nothing did the British create heritage
building in GPO Fort Mumbai. Today we notice some desperate attempts
at adding a fresh coat of the famous red to post officer, though most
still bring back memories of that familiar musty odious, crumbling
furniture and blotches of glue that made a mess of the space meant for
pasting stamps, writing letters and filling up forms. But India Post,
post office Savings Banking and speed-post have added a contemporary
twist to the post office.
Much before the gates of the World wide web of the Internet were
progressively thrown open to us, before mobile phones turned our art
of communication into SMSs, Twitter reduced our eloquence to 140-byte
tweets, Facebook restricted our predilection to like and Unlike, and
What's App introduced a lexicon into our idiom, the postcard was the
star player in establishing contact between friends, relative,
siblings and acquaintances. Along with the above changes sweeping our
lifestyle, the art of letter-writing also seems to be on the wane. In
the good old days, it bonded people together- parents, siblings,
friends, acquaintances- regardless of where they were stationed or
occupied. Those little homilies and personal touches packed into
postcards, in fact portrayed the sign of the times, and how people
warmed up to each other.
It is unfortunate that these simple pleasures of communication are
lost on us today, thanks to modern means of "touching base" which are
stark to the extent of being impersonal. The pleasures of expectation
and eager anticipation no longer exist in the current humdrum of our
lives. Gone with the art of letter-writing are many nuance of
communication that brought a smile to our lips, a lump in the throat,
a choke in the chest, a tear to the eyes or a dimple to a romantic
cheek. Nothing is left to imagination any more. You wonder whether
generation next will have the time and patience for long drawn of of
methods of communication, but, if truth be told, even we are beginning
to find the electronic means of interacting more convenient and
user-friendly.
I still preserve the postcards written by my father to me for
posterity and to show my grandson the real value for handwriting and
how to squeeze number of words within that yellow color card, how to
improve English knowledge and learn punctuation etc. As a freelance
writer I met with success with my first letter written in a postcard
and sent to Times of India, Delhi and published about spinner of the
past Sriniwas Venkatraghavan with a catchy caption " Valiant Venkat "
Still I keep stock of postcards to make use of the same when I feel
like doing so to remember my olden days.
Don Bradman (Australia ) was the most sought after cricketer those
days world over. His popularity reached its peak when a Post Card was
sent to him with a remark

Encourage sports other than cricket
In the recent Sarita Devi case at Asian Games in Incheon, South
Korea was a travesty of fair play and a blot on the competency of the
judges. It was a clear instance of partisanship on the part of judges
for depriving a certain winner Sarita Devi in the boxing bout. It was
her sheer desperation and frustration that prompted her to refuse the
bronze medal. This led to questions of her behaviour and lack of
sportsmanship. The International Amateur Boxing body declared that an
enquiry will be held into her behaviour and if found guilty she will
be banned. But why is nobody questioning the incompetency or bias of
the judges. In fact the enquiry should be directed at the judges and
if found guilty should be disqualified as they are not fit for the
job. Alas, who will judge the judges! Often it is found that it is the
victim who is penalised and the guilty go Scot-free. The incident is a
blot on the game and sportsmanship. The Boxing body should be put
on the mat for appointing such useless judges for important events.
We are all very proud about the performance of the Indian team in the
just concluded Asian Games. When our cricket team could not
participate and bring a Gold medal despite being tagged and hyped as
having very great side with very good bench strength, our Men's
Kabaddi side won the seventh Gold in succession and proved that they
are not second to none. It was an inspiring show as the match in the
final was a close one against Iran and the score line 27-25 in favour
of Team India tell the tale of a close encounter. Even our Women's
team won the Gold to keep the Indian flag flying in Kabaddi. India
thus completed a golden double on the Kabaddi mat for the second
successive edition after the women defeated the same nation 31-21 in
their final But we witnessed players like Leander Paes and his team
mates skipped the Asian Games for better ATP points tally should feel
ashamed as their absence caused us yet another Gold in Tennis also.
Our cricketers have time to play IPL, CL and Kanga League failed to
show their faces in Asian Games so far. Team management is helping
their cause to make more money and in the bargain make big booty.
BCCI is money minded and not medal minded. It is time to encourage
games like Kabaddi in India rather than fostering the Paper Tiger
Indian Cricket Team, who are scared of going out of India and play in
Asian Games as well. Kudos to Kabaddi team for the stupendous show.
It is heartening to note that Indian team performed very well in the
Asian Games in Incheon and that made us very proud. Had we put in
some more efforts and played with killer instinct we could have
converted number of bronze medal to silver and silver medals to Gold
and come out with flying colours as the fifth or sixth team in the
medals tally instead of finishing with 8th position. Fifty seven
medals is not a mean achievement. The scintillating show of 37 bronze
medals could have been converted to Silver if our stars, showed little
resilience in the end games. The finishing touch was missing in the
end and we finished with only 11 Gold medals and 9 silver medals in
the end. There was a chance of finishing behind top teams in the
overall medals tally, but the lack of Gold winning show put paid our
aspirations in the final show down. Hockey Gold and Kabaddi Gold
medals made us proud in the end. Time to go all out in all such
sports events to make a more meaningful performance than what we
achieved now.

World Champions tag is under threat
By playing tantrums on and off the field Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has earned a bad name in the cricketing circle and the recent criticism came from Ian Chappell. If a foreign scribe does not have any cricketing connection with the Board the they come out openly to criticise the management of Team India by Dhoni. This we have witnessed in the past and the trend continue even now. Fleming the Chennai Super King coach talked in favour of Dhoni as he will continuing as a coach for an Indian Team some more time and hence he will have to use more superlatives in the survival game. The latest English debacle was worse than those previous capitulations because India achieved a monumental victory at Lord’s. This should’ve been the springboard to a spirited attempt to stretch that lead but instead it became the top step on the slippery dip to oblivion. To pick Ravindra Jadeja as a front line spinner is a serious miscasting. Then Dhoni proceeded to use him as a stopgap trundler at the Ageas Bowl in what looked like an attempt to prove he wasn’t a front line spin bowler. At a time when you have a pair of highly rated pace bowlers in India warming up the benches in England, Dhoni chose to have Sir as his main weapon and the move backfired, and his role as wicket keeper in all the three formats of the game was just above school boy standard. By missing vital chances we blew our chances and the captain was also part of that dismal failure. Fortunately, his batting clicked and that too of no use because the team did not last 90 overs and lost the match in 3 days. Thus it is proved beyond doubt that Dhoni is a serial offender in Indian debacles both as a captain and wicket keeper.
Both India and England start preparations for the World Cup in Australia-New Zealand, and try to identify players who will be suited to the conditions there. So it is a tough balance between winning this series and getting ready for the World Cup, and both sides will be searching for it. Team India showed wretched form in the last three test matches and handed over the series to England after being being 1-0 up after the second test at Lords. But one day is a different cup of tea altogether and both the teams are gearing up for the best before the commencement of World cup. England brought in swashbuckling Alex Hales to open alongside skipper Alastair Cook while Steve Finn was brought in for Stuart Broad to boost the morale in the short form of cricket. By now, all sides have a nucleus of the players they want to take to the Cup and England will only be playing ODIs in the run-up to the World Cup . There are always six-seven players who will be tried out in the coming months and they can at best fill the last three-four spots as Team India batting strength failed to impress in conventional form of the game. Our openers are scratchy for some time. Both Virat Kohli, who is sadly out of form and Suresh Raina used to show weakness against the short ball on seaming conditions occupies the top spot. Hence, the focus will be on the tail to wag as in the past and if they fail then the team will have a very tough time to win. But we are one day wonders and no one can predict the outcome of a close series.
Team India's World Champions tag is under threat and by the way we fail to win a single match in bilateral series in the last couple of years shows up our inherent weakness in any form of the game on overseas conditions. It is now a known fact that Indian Team well only at home and it was our blessing in disguise that the World Cup happened in India in the year 2011. Indian fans are a sign of resignation, and a statement of fact that if India do well in ODIs, the Tests debacle will be forgotten. It is, however, not as straightforward. India's ODI form outside Asia and the West Indies - similar slow pitches as back home - has been awful except for the Champions Trophy win last year. Even counting those five wins, India have won eight and lost 13 of their ODIs in England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand since the last World Cup. This series is also important because India need a bigger road map to arrest their overseas free-fall. There is no
guarantee Ravi Shastri and the new band of domestic assistant coaches will be effective, or if Shastri will remain with the team after the series. He has had a few informal one-on-ones with Duncan Fletcher and a couple of players. Just pep talk won't do. He will have to come with an instant solutions to the problems. It is indeed testing times for Team India. Team India is shot of success on overseas conditions.

Ashwin the number one all-rounder
SHASTRI SEEK SUCCESS
Ravi Shastri is the blue eyed boy of BCCI. He always toes the line of
the cricket body. It is no surprise that BCCI runs to him every time.
He was a very average cricketer. The establishment played him in every
spot from 11 to 1 to ensure he remains in the team. To his credit, it
must be said that he grabbed what was offered to him. As a bowler,I
have nothing to say except that he was steady. One good thing about
Ravi Shastri is that he is not short of words and a good communicator.
He is also reported to ensure that others listen and act as per his
diktats which is good because the brats we have in the team need
someone to crack the whip. It was somewhat easy for Border to build a
side in early 70s because he got disciplined guys and also because he
could set an example to others. The present Indian team suffers from a
bloated ego and sort of indiscipline. Let us hope that for the sake of
Indian cricket, Shastri is able to do something. His support staff of
Arun, Bangar and Shridar are also very good. It is to revamp the
side. Appointment of Shastri is not just for the debacle of Dhoni and
company but to make sure that the team comes out trumps after disaster
struck the side in Test match cricket. It is time for revamp.

Captain let down the team
Captain Dhoni has let the team down with his poor captaincy. By opting to bat first we were threatened by medium fast bowling of experienced English bowlers. The move diminished our chances of putting up even a moderate score in the first innings. Thanks to Ashwin we could cross 150 runs mark and brought some respectability to the score. Dhoni's bowling changes were also were questionable. Again, Ashwin should haven been used when there was shine in the ball to get extra nip and to get rid of left handed batsmen quickly. Dhoni's flamboyant batting is good for shortest form of cricket. His decision to go for helicopter shots work in our pitches. He does not have the technique to combat genuine pace and clever spin bowling. The less said about his keeping, the better. His reluctance to dive for the ball also sees many edges go begging. He do not want to get injured in any way and stick to his role as captain. Our slip fielders are really slip fielders. They let everything slip through their fingers. The catch dropped by Jadeja when a Cook was batting at 15 cost us the third test and now the test series is slipping out of our grasp. Coming back to Dhoni,it would be ideal if he plays only 20-20 and retires from test cricket and one day cricket.Dinesh Kartik could be the keeper in tests and Saha in one dayers. We cannot also depend on over rated cricketers like Virat Kohli, Dhawan, Jadeja, Rohit etc.How long can we tolerate the statement that form is temporary but class is permanent? Who cares about class and their ICC ratings when one does not score runs. To think of Kohli as a future captain is frightening. We have a captain who makes wrong decisions. To bat first on a cloudy day on a green top was a recipe for disaster. To categorise Jadeja as an all rounder is a joke. He does not merit a place in the team. Pankaj Singh bowls military medium and does not have the pace to trouble batsmen. Varun was not given a chance for the first three tests even though the England players did not have a clue to the bouncers and fiery spell of Ishant. The faith of the captain on Dhawan,Kohli, Rohit and Jadeja is simply favouritism. None of the four have the technique to play seam and swing. Kohli is basically backfoot player and even a mild swing is enough to take the edge as his tentative forward push is not enough to negotiate swing. Moreover,he does not gave a clue as to where his off stump is and the way he shouldered arm to expose his off stump shows his inherent weakness. Shikhar Dhawan plays all types of cricket in his so called offensive style. This could be great if you play in sub continent pitches where the ball does not do much. Pujara has looked good in patches but all at sea against seam and swing bowling. India should also play with English cricket balls than the Kookabura ball. Dhoni has been found wanting as a wicket keeper. The selectors should have persisted with Dinesh Karthik and he is ignored for no valid reasons. Rahane should be at number 3 with Pujara at 4. Pragyan Ojha should be in the team and it is time to discard Jadeja. Ashwin seems a better bat and should bat higher and give Lion's share of bowling to get rid of southpaw as the so called medium-pacers struggle to adjust to the line and sparay the new ball. Left handers develop good partnerships against India and that ultimately put paid our hopes. Thus the captain let the team down.

MAULED AT MANCHESTER
WAKE UP TIME FOR TEAM INDIA
By underestimating an English professional side, Team India was mauled
at Manchester. At Southampton we lost all the 13 sessions of the test
match, but in the 4th test we lost the game in the first hour only. We
played pathetic cricket to finish the game within 3 days and that too
in rain spoiled match. As usual Dhoni blamed his batsmen for the poor
show, but his decision to bat first back fired in the end. After
winning the Lord's test we failed to play as a team and the absence of
Ishant Sharma played into our minds. Complacency put paid our hopes
and now we are one test down with one to go. Team India played like
an one day side and could not last even 50 overs in both the innings
of the match. Moeen Ali made the ball to talk and the mauling was
complete and the team doomed to dust. The redeeming factor of the
Indian innings was the confidence displayed by R. Ashwin as a batsman.
He sounded his confidence as an all rounder and he can form nucleus of
future Indian Team. From 21st July to 9th August, the team nosedived
lost confidence and surrendered meekly. India out batted, out paced
and now outs pinned also in overseas conditions. It is indeed a wake
up time for Team India.
Team India's pathetic show with the bat continued and the main culprit
was the key player Virat Kohli. He could not stand up to the test of
fiery fast bowlers of England and at times failed against spin as
well. Kohli did not score a single run off Anderson in three of the
six innings he faced him. Overall, Anderson has dismissed Kohli five
times and only conceded 30 runs from ten innings. How long we can
depend on such a scratchy player and made him to occupy the key spot
and fail repeatedly. The batting line up need drastic changes from
top to number seven. All round capabilities of Ashwin should be
explored and he should be promoted in batting like Joe Root to see how
he perform consistently at the highest level. Thus we make mess of a
situation and from a position of strength we lose out without a
semblance of fight. If Dhoni is to be continued as skipper he must be
made to toil for his place in the side as he misses easy chances
behind the stumps and play like a tail ender in front of the wicket.
We need a stable bat at number four and depth in batting to face the
second new ball with some confidence. Infuse young blood to the
batting line up and experiment bowling combination to achieve desired
results.
India's tour of England shows that Indian team just lack the will to
stay longer and that put us in a fix even to last long enough for 3
days. Now the question arises, whether Team India is good enough to
play five day test matches. We were scared for genuinely fast wickets
on pacy tracks but never saw a team capitulate so easily against spin
from a good start of 53 for one to 66 for 6, thereby handed the Leeds
test on a platter to England and surrendered meekly. The team think
lost out in the race to select a balanced side and exposed passengers
in the side after winning the second Test. After winning the test the
onus ought to have been to press home the advantage and make the
English side to pay for their lapse in Lord;s test. Instead we were
found wanting. We lost the third test by 266 runs and the fourth by
an innings and 54 runs and now on the way to losing the series. It is
our own making as the team selection was not up to the mark. We do
not have a quality left-arm spinner like P. Ojha (Like R. Herath) to
pin the batsmen and get some useful wickets. Team selectors even
waited to long to include Ashwin and when selected also used him
occasionally as a change bowler and not the mainstay of our attack.
Aaron was also made to wait for a long time and others were given a go
before bringing him. Leeds debacle gave us a chance to change the
composition of the side and do some drastic changes to clear off our
overseas blues once for all. Team India in tatters for the time
being. It is indeed wake up time for Dhoni and Company.

CULTIVATE SAVING HABIT
Savings is a good habit and one should cultivate the same on a regular basis. Small drops of water makes an ocean is true. And if you save something for the day then you can very well bank on that during hard times when expenses go above your neck. You are in a good job, earn a fat salary and have a bright future. Yet, none of this is evident when you look at your savings. This is because young people often find it difficult to save in the initial years of their careers. Studies reveal that discretionary spending can be as high as 18-20% of the income for young people. A 2011 study by Assocham revealed that almost 35% of the urban youth spend up to Rs 5,000 a month on clothing alone. This is one of the reasons most young people have such low savings. Experts recommend some extreme measures for serious shopping addicts. Some say you should just note down the card details and then cut the card into pieces so that you can't use it anymore. Others suggest you keep the card in a paper sleeve and stick pictures of your kids or spouse on it. You will be reminded of the other goals you may be jeopardising when you swipe the card for an unnecessary purchase. Having worked in a bank as a Senior Manager and served for 38 years I learned the art of savings and during my retired life I feel the security in life as I am not hard pressed for money. One should save first before spending exorbitantly thus losing a chance of saving for the future. Wait and watch approach serves as a best tool as we need to act patiently at the time of crisis and perseverance pay pivotal role in preserving the earnings for your old days. The usage of plastic money more put you in tight situation when the 45 days stipulated time gets over. You need to provide balance or if you pay part of the due, then for the balance amount you need to pay penal interest and some times face the wrath of Bank's appointed agents when the amount falls overdue. It is better to be on safer side and for that cultivate Saving habit and save your skin and lead a peaceful life for ever.

NEWSPAPERS PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE
For more than two centuries in this country, newspapers have been used
in classroom instruction. Although innovative teachers probably
enhanced instruction with newspapers since they were first printed,
the earliest known reference to newspapers as tools for learning
appeared in the Portland Eastern Herald of Maine on June 8, 1795.
Since then newspapers are part and parcel of the curriculum and serve
as an educational tool.
Much has been said and written on the utility of newspapers; but one
principal advantage which might be derived from these publications has
been neglected; we mean that of reading them in schools, and by the
children in families. Try it for one session. Do you wish your child
to improve in reading solely, give him a newspaper; it furnishes a
variety, some parts of which must indelibly touch his fancy. Do you
wish to instruct him in geography, nothing will so indelibly fix the
relative situation of different places, as the stories and events
published in the papers. In time, do you wish to have him acquainted
with the manners of the country or city, the mode of doing business,
public or private; or do you wish him to have a smattering of every
kind of science useful and amusing, give him a newspaper. Newspapers
are plenty and cheap, the cheapest book that can be bought, and the
more you buy the better for your children, because every part
furnishes valuable information.
During election time and newspapers play a pivotal role in bringing
the political parties to the fore and peak at the right time.
Photographs bursts in the first page with catchy captions and rebuttal
from the political leaders. News papers play a pivotal role in
politics and more so in our regular life. It is indeed a time for news
in early morning hours. Some people even skip their morning coffee
but never forget to read the newspaper. Even though e-paper is
available in the net for most of the newspapers people prefer to buy
newspaper and browse through at home and even take it to office for a
thorough study. newspapers are the backbone of the country and the
fulcrum round which the universe is functioning.
