Feast of football in the final
Germany's captain Philipp Lahm was the proud man as he lifted the World Cup trophy with a 1-0 win against Argentina in the final soccer match between Germany and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There were lots of twist and turns but better side won in the end. Early exit of Tournament favourite Brazil gave an opening to the other sides in the Championship to come to the last two stage. Germany, while leaving something in reserve, came close to making the breakthrough just before the break when Höwedes charged through a congested penalty area and headed Thomas Müller’s corner against the post. Götze had taken down Schürrle’s cross on his chest with his first touch. His second was to arrow a left-foot volley into the net and that ensured Germany will always remember Rio de Janeiro with the same fondness as Bern in 1954, Munich in 1974 and Rome in 1990. Germany played great football and they deserved to win the coveted trophy. It was indeed feast of football in the final.
