WHAT IS WRONG WITH MUMBAI CRICKET?
Time and again we find Mumbai Team is in a ticklish situation despite
the commercial capital is having abundant talent in hand. Mumbai
cricket Team suffered four straight losses in IPL 7 despite the tag of
IPL and Champions League winner and failed to qualify in any of the
tournament including the Ranji Trophy Championship. It is their own
making and no one can repair the damage. By forming a committee or
discussing for hours about the debacle nothing is to be achieved. The
team is having inherent weakness of playing fast bowling in any form
of the game. Like Indian Team they are fishing balls outside the off
stump and perishing in the slip region or caught behind the wicket.
Mumbai team is good in playing at home like the National Team.
Maxwell was not given fair chance in Mumbai Indians and now is key
player in Kings XI Punjab. Spent forces like Harbhajan Singh and
Zaheer Khan were given pride of place and talented players were
chucked out despite having huge some of money at the disposal. Winning
and losing are different but the way of losing hurt the ardent lover
of Mumbai cricket. At the lower levels runs are made in plenty and
almost all the school heroes become zeroes afterwards including Vinod
Kambli. Playing Kanga League and Times Shield is not going to help
the side to recreate the earlier form and the name. Players from
Mumbai should go out during off season as nearly 4-5 months is lost
due to rain and the wet condition of the wicket afterwards. did
prevent active cricket. Thus the players suffer because of lack of
practice and to add salt to the wound poor team selection put paid the
hopes of upcoming youngsters and the talent available in the state.
Players avoid playing for Mumbai and go out and represent other sides
as the treatment meted out at home is not encouraging. Old warhorses
get repeated chances whereas new comers get odd chance and dropped
like a hot potato. Instead of having caste and religion for selection
a transparent selection policy should be framed. For Under 14
selection nearly 900 boys were called and out of it only lucky ones
got selection including Sachin Tendulkar's son, who failed to attend
the selection process and find his name in the final list. For getting
selected to the team you need to have God Fathers required and players
without recommendation are pushed out without proper trial. That
shows where the weakness lies. Despite having senior cricketers
stationed at Mumbai and the ELF Vengsarkar's Coaching Centre is
spotting talent, MCA is having perverted view on picking up players
and that put paid hopes all these years and now the team is in
doldrums and it will take at least 5 years to revive the side to the
top slot. Now or never situation has come in IPL 7 and now Mumbai need
to win 8 out of the 10 matches left out to play and the captain is
still expecting home wicket to win few matches and there lies the real
weakness and the tag of home tiger.
Mumbai Indians low five
Mumbai Indians played pathetic cricket and lost all the five matches
in the ongoing IPL 7 Champions underway in UAE. For this poor show
the team comprising of Mentor Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, Advisor Ricky
Ponting, Coach John Wright, Chief Coach Anil Kumble, fielding coach
Jonty Rhodes. Despite having all these five men in the dug out,
Mumbai Indians had Robin Singh as a catching coach. But the team is
playing as though they were catching the next flight back to Mumbai.
Huge loss against Chennai Super Kings is counting upon the Mumbai
outfit as they are showing minus run rate also to add to the series of
losses in foreign soil. Now everything is back to square one and the
Mumbai Team is to start from the scratch. For this the team is
expecting a turn around in the home soil and that too in the backyard
of Mumbai Stadiums. Why there was hype for a mediocre team all these
days with ads showing the team as an unbeatable side. Now everything
is going Topsy turvy and it was sad sight to see captain Rohit
Sharma's face.
Mumbai Team put up a poor show and touched rock bottom in the IPL 7
table. MI underestimated the opposition from the word go and made
mess of things. It was disappointing and frustrating show by a
Champion side. Complacency struck the Reliance sponsored side and the
twists and turns turned the tables in the end. Mumbai's pad patch
continue not only in IPL but also in Ranji Trophy and other major
tournaments played in the domestic circuit. The trend continue to
haunt a star studded side for some more time. Team does have the old
weakness of succumbing to sheer pace and thereby losing the initiative
from the word go. More over, old warhorses are perishing in batting
without semblance of fight when in dire straits. Just by bowling good
overs or by just hitting a boundary a player cannot become an all
rounder in the side. Despite having the back up from all the corner
this Mumbai team does not have any staying power like the old Bombay
side. Last year it was high five for Mumbai Indians and this year it
is low five as they got Zero points from 5 matches. Turn around is
expected in tailor made wickets at Wankhede Stadium and with even
umpires will play their part to make Mumbai side reach a position to
challenge other sides in the Championship.
